Our family has raised dachshunds since the 70's, but when my daughter, Bridget, and I spun off our kennel, TNPuppies, we wanted to try our luck in the show ring. So we purchased our first champion bred dog, Cash, from Ginger Van Damm of Bright Creek Kennels.
Cash had some success in the show ring, but never finished.
We fell in love with a male from Ginger named Nucky and specifically asked for a new Black and Tan male from Nucky.
Carter had zero success at the show ring, but what he added to our program has been priceless. Carter was small and threw small. You could breed him to a 15 lb female and get 9 lb pups!
It wasn't until Carter was almost 2 before we even noticed that we had the "Carter Cash" theme. But this is how we came up with WTL which actually stands for the Johnny Cash hit, "Walk The Line".
Then Cris Natali was willing to help with the breeding pair Timber & Zoey. First bitch we showed was from that male from Criscross. Look at that topline. We were so excited to send her to the ring with a professional handler. Unfortunately, whenever she got on the table she would hunch her back like a camel. Hung our heads in shame and went back to the drawing board.
Cashmere, Pearl, Peso, Mercedes, and anything else Cash can buy all descend from Cash. Cashmere was the only one who went to the ring. She was the first dog I showed, but poor girl would never eat and was just too small to make much impact. She only got a few points, but she gained me plenty of friendships!
While we no longer work with Stendachs at all, I got some nice dogs from the kennel.
Parker was a hard one to finish. He had characteristics that I really wanted in my breeding program, but his legs were so short and he was so low to the ground, you could not really see how he moved.
In 2020, we sold him to Megan Hussey with the agreement that she had to finish him. He just needed one more major. Megan sent him out with Kaye Atkinson, and bam, they got that major.
This is the girl that ignited my fire! I had shown for over a year with just moderate success. Then this beautiful baby at her first show she blew everyone away winning 2 days and reserve 2 days! Just phenomenal!
She and I went on and managed to complete her CH as owner handler and even took a OH G4 against a ring full of great hounds! Due to Covid, I sent her out with professional handlers to finish her GCH.
And then there is my first Bred By that went all the way! This girl definitely is my most recognized champion from the WTL Kennel. I am so proud of this girl! She has the biggest personality.
What is absolutely AMAZING about this girl, her mom is from our PET LINE! Not a single show dog in the pedigree on mom's side! The same line that my mother started in the 70s. My mother worked very hard to stay true to the correct look of a dachshund. Zenyatta's mom is a dog that cannot even be shown since she is a dapple piebald. You can see my pet line on tnpuppies.com. Of course, a lot of credit goes to Zenyatta's dad, Mayor, who is also the dad of Trulee!
Next came Windsor. Leigh Smith from NC took a chance on me as well. While she mostly breeds longs, I waited patiently for a smooth. Took him out as a puppy and bam, started winning out of the gate. He was my first that went BOV! Very Exciting!
My 2nd Bred By Champion! Alpha is my dream dog. Carries for dilute, PRA Clear, And has a super thick coat. Kicked butt at so many shows I could not possibly be prouder!
I know dilutes are scary, but with DNA testing we can watch for heavier coats that will help eliminate basic coat issues. Of course, we are still watching for any signs of CDA, but his mom has NONE!
My 3rd Bred By Champion! This girl prompted multiple texts and calls from friends as I was unable to show her. Got lots of attention and went out with a huge BOV over multiple breeders I thought my line would NEVER beat! Never Give UP!
